FS#20162 - Crit penalty vs higher level

I believe something may be wrong with crit vs bosses.

You should get a 1% crit penalty per level difference when hitting something that is a higher level than you (this means a 3% penalty vs a boss). This is why for frost mages, shatter cap is 28% crit ((28-3)*2+50=100) and warriors have a soft cap at 48% (53% with raid buffs) crit for bloodthirst (53-3*2=100).

I was talking with a warrior friend and he told me that he’s always critting with 45% (50% in raids) crit.

So it got me wondering and i went to test this myself with my mage against a boss level target dummy. These were the results:
https://imgur.com/a/AqnhMTI

(The tooltips are at the bottom right of the screenshots showing the number of hits with crit percentage)

For the tests i was at 25.01% crit with no int procs (so 25.01% for the whole duration).

So i got 100+87+100+85 = 372 crits and no hits.
With 25.01% crit chance, i should have (25.01-3)*2+50 = 94.02% crits vs a boss level target dummy with my ice lance and ffb.
I have no way to actually prove it is bugged, and i’m not the best statistician in the world, but my basic maths tell me that if it’s working as it should, there’s a 0.94^372 chance (about 1 in 500 million) of obtaining these results. (Or I’m dumb and I missed something obvious which explains why I’m only getting crits)

Did 200 iterations with no crit or intel procs on dummy of FoF'd Ice Lances and BF'd FFB, expected crit is 94.6%, actual is 100%. Would do more but this probably easy to verify by looking at formulas behind the scene so whatever.

I just realised I could have tried to get a crit with no gear on...

So that's what I did (I added a picture to the original imgur post). And indeed I got a frostbolt crit with the base 1% crit from my base stats. This should be impossible with a 3% crit suppression

I believe you wrote the frost mage formula wrong. It should be (28-3)*2+50=100. The doubling takes place before the 50% bonus (or else it would be 100% crit all the time). Nonetheless, this have nothing to do with the other numbers, or the validity of your report.

Woops, indeed! I'll edit it

I think your warr friend lied to you. and here is why I think that:
Abit older report, but he ask very similar:
 FS#13838

He has 50+% crit, yet not crit every time he lands a bloodthirst.

Zunrin-Evermoon commented on 21.05.2020 13:26

i checked my skada after a raid evening last week and he had 648 crits, a few parries and no hits, might have just been luck, but luck doesnt explain how I'm able to crit vs a boss level dummy with 1% crit with a frostbolt.

Just checked if the issue is the dummies, and it looks like that's not the case as I was able to crit IJ with 2.43% crit

Aszi commented on 21.05.2020 15:39

Did the same with a mage, for me it was 0 crit after 200 FB cast. (then I gave it up..)

Shako commented on 26.05.2020 02:46

A faster way to check on dummies naked is putting 3 Nether Tempests up on the Orgrimmar raid dummies since you can get hundreds of ticks a minute (and it demonstrates the same problem, since Nether Tempest can crit fully naked (5 crits and 628 hits for me over about 2 minutes, for example).

There is definitely something odd.
